Occult Infection

Name: Najwa Isra.

Age: ICly, he's not sure; OOCly late 30s.
Appearance: Human male, mixed race, average height, brown hair, paler brown eyes. If he gets his clothing off, large parts of his body are patched with what looks like liquid metal and/or inscribed with sigals embedded in his flesh. (Gross.)

History: Isra (not his real name) is from a world where magic and superhuman experiences are possible, just not very unlikely (e.g. less than 0.01% of people have a Knack). There are a handful of card carrying Good Guys with capes, but most people who have a bit of magic or 'mutant' style skills don't get anything too dramatic or useful.

As far as he's been able to piece together, Isra had been working abroad in a remote and somewhat dangerous area when things began to go very, very wrong for him indeed. He (and all those he was with) were gravely wounded, but stress kicked his latent Knack into activity and he was able to keep himself alive and rebuilt bits of himself through technopathy. As a nasty side-effect, most of his memory from before his accident is blurry at best. There are flickers and flashes, but very little he's confident about.

He said with the private military contractors that found what was left of him (and his friends), and has continued to work with them for the last decade or so. During that time, he's gotten better at rebuilding and repairing himself, but alas, his old injury took out his ability to get hard. (Duplicity is going to change that. Huzzah, a magically working dong.)

Isra is reasonably sure that the people he's worked for aren't great people, and they're certainly not the Good Guys. He also suspects that they might be responsible for wiping out most of his past - just because he can't remember it doesn't mean it shouldn't be accessible. Didn't he ever have a Facebook? An email that wasn't for work? They told him his name and he's not even sure it's the right one. Still, pays the bills, and he's not really sure what else to do with himself.

During that time, he's mostly provided tech support services - either from a distance, or occasionally by going into the field. He's good at taking apart other people's security systems, rifling their information-filled metaphorical pockets, and putting (most) things back where they came from. OOCly, this character concept grew out of a Q (from Bond) AU that took on a life of its own.

Personality:
1. Reckless: Being fearless can be useful in certain ways and in certain situations, but when it goes to far, it's a right and proper mess. For Isra, it manifests in a disregard for his own personal safety, a driving curiosity that he just has to sate (despite the costs), and committing to an action and then following through no matter what. Despite being comfortable in high risk situations, he's not an adrenaline junkie, and won't intentionally seek them out.
-- Example: Regular, homemade self-surgery based on gut instinct and "let's see what that does!" isn't really the sign of a patient and pragmatic individual.

2. Amoral: While not necessarily corrupt, Isra places a higher value on himself than on others. Or rather, he believes that everyone else is already shitty and/or dubiously moral, so he doesn't see why he ought to suffer and martyr himself needlessly.
-- Example: I'm not saying that everyone that chooses to work for private military contractors is amoral, often it's just a practical, if unpleasant, choice. Isra is not one of those people. He probably could get a good job elsewhere, maybe devote himself to research, but he'd much rather travel the world, meet interesting people, and then figure out how best to blow up their bridges.

3. Petty & Vindictive: On the whole, Isra tends to be live and let live sort of person, if someone he dislikes crosses an arbitrary line, and he will be a nasty, hateful, malicious bastard. The way he sees it, hurting people for business is just business; hurting people for fun is fucked up; hurting people he likes is unacceptable.
-- Example: He is aware that there are good, practical ways to deal with people that cross or irritate him, but he would rather not use them. Annoying neighbour up at all hours of the night? Isra would rather ruin his credit score over calling the cops with a noise complaint.

Positive traits:
4. Determined: Clever, interested in all sorts of things, and a hard worker. Isra can apply himself when he chooses to do so, but usually only ever for his own benefit.
-- Example: He did rebuild himself out of a busted bunch of supplies, a magical Knack, and a lot of determination not to die in a ditch.

Powers and Abilities:
Technopath: Isra has the ability to manipulate hardware and software; rebuild and perform repairs on himself, but needs regular access to electricity to keep himself functional. (One of the first things he'll do in Dup is arrange for a portable battery pack for himself.)

In general, this mostly just means that he's good at building and repairing things, and that if he really puts a lot of effort into it, he can bring to life little mechanical familiars. Sure, you can buy a pet, but why bother when you can make one?

Inventory:
1. One computer repair kit, or if that is too much, a soldering tool and some solder.
2. A photo of a young Isra, sitting on the hood of a sandy transport vehicle. He is wearing desert camo, visibly armed, laughing, and has his arm around someone similarly attired. His face is not yet scarred.
3. A technopath's version of an athame. The blade is not sharp, but it is made of silicon and (probably) solidified magical data nonsense.
